QuantStudio software for Mac: your options in 2026
The QuantStudio instruments are controlled from a Windows PC, and so is most of the desktop analysis. If you write your papers on a MacBook, here is what is actually available.
There is no native macOS version of the QuantStudio desktop analysis software. Mac users have three routes: Thermo Fisher's cloud analysis, which runs in a browser but requires uploading your run files to the vendor's platform; the Windows desktop software inside a virtual machine; or an independent Mac app that reads .eds files directly, such as CycleView, which draws the curves, recalculates Cq, runs ΔΔCt and exports figures locally.
Why the analysis is tied to Windows
qPCR instruments ship with a control PC, and the analysis package grew up on that same machine. For the instrument itself that is reasonable. For analysis it means the person who needs the data, usually the one writing the paper, has to go back to a shared computer in the lab to move a threshold or look at a melt curve.
Route 1: the vendor's cloud analysis
Thermo Fisher offers browser-based analysis on its cloud platform, which works from any operating system. The trade-off is that your run files are uploaded to the vendor's servers. Many groups are fine with that. Others work with unpublished, patient-derived or contract data and are not allowed to, or simply want analysis that works without a network connection.
Route 2: Windows in a virtual machine
Install Parallels or VMware Fusion, a Windows licence, and the desktop software. On Intel Macs this is dependable. On Apple silicon you get the ARM edition of Windows and rely on emulation for x86 software, so test before relying on it. Budget for the licence cost and the disk space.
Route 3: a native Mac app that reads .eds
CycleView opens .eds files directly on macOS. What you get:
- the plate map with your sample and target names
- amplification curves on log or linear axes, and melt curves with derivative peaks
- adjustable threshold and baseline per target, with Cq updating live
- ΔΔCt with one or more reference genes and statistics
- SVG and PNG figures, and RDML or CSV export
Plate setup and running the instrument stay in the vendor software. CycleView takes over once the run file exists.
Which route to choose
| Need | Best route |
|---|---|
| Set up and run plates | Vendor software on the instrument PC |
| Analyse on a Mac, data may leave the lab | Vendor cloud or CycleView |
| Analyse on a Mac, data must stay local | CycleView |
| Mixed instrument brands | CycleView |
Open your run on your own laptop
CycleView opens QuantStudio, LightCycler, Rotor-Gene and RDML files on Mac and Windows. The viewer is free, and nothing is uploaded.

FAQ
Is CycleView made by Thermo Fisher?
No. CycleView is independent and not affiliated with Thermo Fisher Scientific. It reads QuantStudio run files for compatibility.
Can I set up a plate on my Mac?
Run setup and instrument control stay in the vendor software. CycleView is for analysis once the run is done.
Does it work on Apple silicon?
Yes. CycleView runs natively on Apple silicon and Intel Macs.
